Europa League Preview: Lillestrøm Host Real Sociedad as Both Sides Seek Maiden League Phase Win
Lillestrøm welcome La Liga contenders Real Sociedad to Åråsen Stadion, with both clubs having picked up just one point from their opening two Europa League phase matches. The Norwegian underdogs aim to capitalize on home advantage against a Basque outfit fresh off a high-scoring domestic triumph, as both sides chase their first continental victory of the campaign.
Match Background & Qualification Scenarios
Heading into matchday three of the 2026-27 UEFA Europa League phase, both Lillestrøm and Real Sociedad find themselves in urgent need of momentum. Both teams possess identical records with a 2-1 defeat followed by a 1-1 draw, leaving them in 23rd and 22nd place respectively in the 36-team standings. Lillestrøm earned their European ticket by lifting the Norwegian Cup while competing in the second tier last year, whereas Copa del Rey holders Real Sociedad entered with higher ambitions. A victory is crucial for either side to keep hopes alive for a top-eight direct last-16 spot or secure a comfortable playoff position.
Recent Form
Lillestrøm have recorded 2 wins, 2 draws, and 1 defeat across their last 5 competitive fixtures, recently bouncing back to form with a solid 2-0 away victory over Sandefjord in the Eliteserien. Real Sociedad enter the contest in strong domestic form, boasting 3 wins, 1 draw, and 1 defeat in their past 5 outings, highlighted by a prolific 5-2 triumph over Málaga in La Liga that demonstrated their potency in attack.
Key Players & Injury News
For Lillestrøm, veteran forward Thomas Lehne Olsen has been the decisive talisman, scoring crucial goals in each of their first two European outings. Real Sociedad will rely on Icelandic striker Orri Óskarsson and midfielder Beñat Turrientes to unlock the hosts' backline. In terms of team news, La Real will be without Yangel Herrera due to a persistent calf problem, alongside long-term injury absentees Álvaro Odriozola and Jon Aramburu.
